Family Photography Timeline: When to Get Professional Family Photos With Your Children

As a Washington DC family photographer, one of the best ways to document your family’s journey is by taking regular professional family photos. Your children grow up so fast and change so much, especially in their younger years. If you’re wondering how often you should take family pictures, this blog post will walk you through your family photography timeline from the newborn stage through childhood.

When To Take Professional Family Photos

When You Have a Newborn

The newborn stage goes by so, so quickly. Each week your baby is changing so much and growing. If you want to capture those early days of infancy, it's best to take your newborn photos around the 5-10 day old mark or after you've been able to home from the hospital for a few days. This allows you to capture those sweet newborn moments within the comfort of your own home and your baby is more likely to still be in that sleepy, curled-up stage which will make the photoshoot much more smooth and adorable.

When Your Baby is 6 Months Old

At 6 months your baby still looks like a tiny baby but they now have a lot more personality than when they were a sleepy newborn allowing you to be much more interactive with them. You'll also get a much bigger variety of photos around this age as you are able to interact more with your little one and you can even gather the whole family around without worrying about waking the baby up.

When Your Child Turns One

The first-year marks so many changes in your baby's life and they have changed so much from the time that they were a newborn. They're now laughing, walking, and maybe even talking! The photos from this year in their life will be some of your most treasured. Plus, who doesn't love a good cake-smashing photo?

At Least Once a Year

Similar to your child's first year, each new year can bring big changes to your family. Whether your family is growing in size or age, documenting these years by taking family portraits is a great way to tell your family's story. One day you will be able to look back and see the changes you went through together and you will be so glad you documented this time in your family's life. Plus, your annual family photos can serve as great holiday cards, gifts, and family albums which will serve as beautiful reminders of your time together after everyone is grown and gone.
