Best Places for an Outdoor Family Session in Silver Spring, Maryland
Just north of Washington DC sits Silver Spring, Maryland. Considered by many to be a hidden gem, Silver Spring offers many perks of city living along with a quiet neighborhood feel. The city places a big emphasis on the arts so there is no shortage of theaters, galleries, art museums, murals, and unique outdoor spaces. As a Maryland family photographer, I’m always on the hunt for beautiful parks and recreational spots for family photo sessions and Silver Spring definitely has much to offer. Today I’ve compiled a list of five of my favorite places for an outdoor family session in this beautiful city.
Acorn Urban Park
First up we have Acorn Urban Park, located in downtown Silver Spring. While this park is the smallest of the Silver Spring parks, it offers a convenient and fun location for the family. It has a great little seating area as well as some various artwork and murals on the surrounding walls.
Sitting in the middle of the park is the Acorn Gazebo, a historic centerpiece that once belonged to 19th-century Silver Spring resident, Francis Preston Blair. Today, the gazebo is the only remaining piece from Blair’s summer home making it a treasured piece of history for Silver Spring residents.
Brookside Gardens
One of my favorite gardens in the DC area is Brookside Gardens! This lovely garden oasis is filled with conservatories, various water elements, flowers, and fruit trees. It’s a great spot to picnic or, if you’re planning a visit during the winter months they offer a fun, family-friendly event called The Garden of Lights. During this time the gardens transfor into a magical winter wonderland. Best of all this garden is completely free (with the exception of special events), making it a top pick for any family session!
Ellsworth Urban Park
If your family includes any four legged friends then Ellsworth Urban Park is the perfect place to visit! This park offers not only a playground for children and a covered picnic pavilion, but also a brand new dog park! The park is also conveniently located and is just steps away from downtown Silver Spring!
Sligo Creek Trail
One of the county’s oldest trails, Sligo Creek Trail, also happens to be one of the most heavily trafficked and it’s not hard to see why. This nature trail is very peaceful and provides great recreation for all ages. Wander the forest trails or have a family picnic along the stream. Either way, a day spent here is sure to be a relaxing one!
Wheaton Regional Park
Wheaton Regional Park is actually home to many parks in Maryland including a few on this list. It spans over 536 acres and is the perfect place for families who love the outdoors! With so many gems like Pine Lake, Shorefield Area, Adventure Playground, and even a historic musical carousel, Wheaton Regional Park is one of the best family photo locations in Maryland!
You can’t go wrong choosing any one of these beautiful parks for your Silver Spring family session. From endless nature spots to urban, artistic hangouts, this city is filled with so many hidden gems!
